Joyful Journey Drums were
beating, feet were stamping and dancing, people were singing, and there
was a sense of joy in the people taking part.
No it wasnt a barn dance or a concert, instead it was a group of
Sudanese Christians who had joined Christians from all over Salisbury
diocese, one Saturday in July, as they gathered to take part in a
pilgrimage from the site of the original Cathedral at Old Sarum, to the
site of the New Cathedral, which was celebrating 750 years of witness.
People brought decorative staffs they had made with colourful streamers
attached, and members of various churches or groups carried banners. It was a dynamic
vibrant spectacle, as people left Old Sarum, to walk down the hill into
the city. Later in the day, once the pilgrims had reached the New
Cathedral there was again singing and dancing, but also the poignant
unveiling of a statue of Canon Ezra, a Sudanese priest shot in cross
fire in 1991. The links Salisbury diocese has with the church in Sudan
began 35 years ago, and have brought benefits to both sides. Often when
I see Sudanese Christians, they appear to show a joy in knowing Christ
that no adversity seems to quench, and it was that joy that came through
their singing and dancing.
We in this country are, materially, immensely better off than the
Sudanese, yet in other ways we seem much poorer; the Sudanese know their
need of God, and of each other, and celebrate what is good in their
lives. Life can often be
described as a journey or pilgrimage, and the summer months are often an
important stage in many peoples journey. Some of our young people will
change school, or perhaps move to jobs or university. The holidays give
people a time to take stock of where their life is heading.
In September we will welcome Revd Andrew Staley and his wife
Donelle to the Nadder Valley Team ministry, and then at the end of the
month we will be saying goodbye to Revd John Staples. Throughout all
these changes there is much to look forward to and to give thanks for,
though there will be sad times as well, but I hope that just as those
Sudanese Christians could be joyful, despite all the adversity they
face, we in our more comfortable lives may also journey joyfully in the
presence of God.

TISBURY PARISH COUNCIL
VACANCY FOR PARISH COUNCILLOR One of the Tisbury Parish Councillors has recently resigned. Although advertisement by Salisbury DC called for, but did not produce, more than 10 electors to ask for an election, such electors did not make themselves known. Consequently, a new Parish Councillor will need to be co-opted.
WOULD YOU BE WILLING TO VOLUNTEER OR KNOW
ANYONE ELSE THAT MIGHT BE INTERESTED? If more than one person is interested, there will need to be a vote (amongst the present Councillors) following a short informal presentation by those interested at the meeting on Tuesday 2nd September at 7pm. Please contact the Parish Clerk on 828699 by Tuesday 26th August 2008 if you require further details or would like to volunteer.

THE BLOG FROM THE AREA BISHOP'S OFFICE
We hope that this will provide an informal way of keeping in touch and we
aim to put on the blog some of the events we are involved in, news from
across the Ramsbury area, book reviews and anything else that might be of
interest. There is space for comment and pages where we can put useful
information. We plan to update the blog at least two or three times a
week.
The Nadder Valley Church Singers is drawn from churches in the two of the Nadder
Valley Team groups - East & South. The Choir itself will be, hopefully, a full
4-part adult choir, able to quickly absorb church music on a short rehearsal
cycle and sometimes even at sight.
The choir will predominately sing choral evensong at any of the 10 churches. The
repertoire will be put together to accommodate the various churches,
particularly with reference to the state of certain organs i.e., providing for
acappella singing for the majority of a service if needed.
If you are interested in joining please contact Nigel Kenyon.
All voices are welcome although we need tenors, particularly.

A
MOMENT OF REFLECTION: for HOLY WEEK
Loving Lord, many of
your disciples today weep in heart if not tears as they look
over the city from the place where you wept over it , as they
follow the way of the cross and stand at the traditional place
where you were crucified , and weep as they remember your broken
body being taken down from the cross.

Bishop David
The Bishop of Salisbury has recently suffered a stroke and is in hospital. Please pray for him
and his family. This unfortunately means he will be unable to join the various events over the
next couple of months.
Bishop Tim
has been appointed Bishop of Truro. As Chair of the Sudan Committee, he hasworked tirelessly for the Link and made several visits to Sudan. He will be greatly missed.
Please pray for him as he prepares to move in the autumn and for the appointment of his
successor
Sudan Committee Secretary
. Give thanks for the appointment of Jeffery Neagle, of LytchettMinster. He is an international business trainer who has made a couple of visits to Sudan.
Lambeth Conference
Please pray much for this important time, that it may be significant in developing our
relationships and in mutual understanding of each others situations. Give thanks that an
attempt to get Sudanese bishops to withdraw was unsuccessful. Archbishop Rowan has
stressed his hope that it will be a time when people are encountering God as they encounter
one another, a time when people will feel that their life of prayer and witness is being deepened
and their resources are being stretched. Not a time when we are being besieged by problems
that need to be solved and statements that need to be finalised, but a time when people feel that
they are growing in their ministry. Please pray that this will indeed be the case.
